Debt funding across the project lifecycle

Exploration and production are different propositions, and the capital that suits one rarely suits the other.

It is tempting to talk about funding a resource project as a single task. In practice, the capital that suits an exploration programme looks very different from the capital that suits a project moving into production, and treating them as the same is a common reason funding stalls.

At the exploration stage, risk is high and outcomes are uncertain. The capital available reflects that. It is more expensive, more cautious, and more focused on the quality of the team and the early evidence than on cash flow that does not yet exist. The case here is about potential that has been tested as far as it can be, and about a plan that spends money in the right order.

As a project moves towards production, the proposition changes. There is a defined resource, a development plan, and a credible view of costs and revenue. The capital that fits this stage can look at cash flow, at offtake, and at the security a developed asset provides. It is generally cheaper and larger, but it asks harder questions about delivery.

The mistake is to bring a production-stage funding request to an exploration-stage project, or to fund early work with capital that expects near-term returns it cannot deliver. Both leave a project mispriced and often unfunded.

Matching capital to stage is most of the work. It means being honest about where a project actually sits, structuring the request to match, and bringing it to providers who fund that stage rather than to whoever is nearest. MMCR works as an arranger and broker precisely because that matching is a specialist task, and getting it right is what turns a strong project into a funded one.
